Description: |
Both structures seem to be under construction in this aerial photograph of the Butler Fieldhouse (left) and the Butler Bowl (right). Both structures were designed by architect Fermor Spencer Cannon, but the Butler Fieldhouse was completed before the Butler Bowl. The first Butler basketball game played inside Butler Fieldhouse was on March 7, 1928, when the Bulldogs defeated Notre Dame 21-13 in overtime, even though the buildings construction was not yet complete. In 1965, the Butler University Board of Trustees passed a resolution to change the name of Butler Fieldhouse to Hinkle Fieldhouse in honor of the Universitys athletic director, football, basketball, and baseball coach, Paul D. Tony Hinkle. The first Butler football game played in the Butler Bowl was on October 13, 1928, when the Bulldogs triumphed over Franklin College. The final score was 55-0. In 2017, the Butler Bowl was renamed the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in honor of a generous donation given by the estate of Winstan R. Bud (Class of 1947) and Jacqueline (Bloomberg) (Class of 1944) Sellick. |
