Letter from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre. June 26, 1944Dear Alice,It has been about a month since I’ve heard from you. Time passes fast over here. I’ve been overseas for 3 months now. Every day passing makes me just that much closer to home. I’m anxious to get to my outfit to see what it is like and also to get the stack of letters that should be waiting. Yesterday morning I went to the ocean for a swim and then yesterday afternoon I went to the creek and washed clothes. While I was doing this I was thinking about my scrub brush and board and how crude a life I am living. The clothes really get clean though. Last night I was tired so I turned in at about 6:30. I didn’t even go down to hear the news. We have a news broadcast every morning. I worked on the shell bracelet this morning. The candle wax keeps sinking in but before I sent it I think I’ll have the shells full. If the wax is sunk when you receive it all that has to be done is to melt a candle and fill it up. I don’t have a fastener either. I won’t get it sent for a while. I finished “G String Murder” am starting “Madame Bovary”.Love, Harold |
