V-mail from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre. May 24, 1944Dear Alice,Still no mail. Why don’t you try writing every other letter V-mail? I noticed that all the mail was V-mail yesterday. I am over to the Red Cross building this P.M. Yes, I had my coke but it wasn’t the treat I expected. Smith and I have been reading and playing two handed bridge. It is raining a nice slow rain this afternoon and is comfortably cool. My washing got dry this morning and now it must be soaked again. Oh well what do I care. How’s everything just as if I could hear right away. I know that I’ll get plenty of news one of these days. I’m still anxious to hear about Vi & Bill. I suppose Susan has more teeth and it won’t be long till she is walking. I’m awaiting pictures patiently. Have you heard from John and Jim? Jim must be in the big affair in Europe. I wonder if there won’t be a similar push in the Pacific. Perhaps I’ll see Tokio [sic] yet. I hope you received some of the coins that I enclosed with the letters about a month ago. I wouldn’t give anything for my experience so far here. It is well worth all the worrying by you people at home. I haven’t seen everything as yet I guess. This will make me appreciate home to the fullest extent. Ss much for now—Love, Harold |
