Letter from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre. June 6, 1944Dear Alice,I’ve spent the morning rereading all the letters I’ve received since I’ve been here. I enjoyed them almost as much as I did before. I think I’m going to work nights as it is so hard to bake during the day when the stoves are needed for other food. I’ll like the night work. After leaving where we were before we left here, not knowing we were coming here from there, we couldn’t tell whether we would arrive here or not. Nevertheless we are here and not there. The weather here is just as it is at this season but of course quite unlike the weather where we were before we came here. After leaving by what we came by we had a trip. The people here are just like they look, but don’t look to be like they were where we came from. From there to here. The way we came here is just like everyone comes from here to there, almost. Of course we had to bring everything we had with us for we wear here which is not like what we would wear there. The whole thing is quite a new experience here because it is not like it is where we were before we left there. It is now time in all probability to stop this somewhat newsy letter before I give too much information. Confidentially, Harold |
