Description: |
The construction crew on Doolittle Hill Road near Elizabeth, Indiana, in Posey Township, pause in their work for a group photo. John Wesley Doolittle (second man in the second row, beard and hat in hand), was contracted to build the road on the rocky, steep slope. His son George Carl Doolittle was also involved with building the road. Two men in different but similar photographs of the construction crew have been identified as the younger Doolittle. In this image, those are the two men who flank John Doolittle - one sits to the left with his hands between his knees and wears a large hat, the other stands to the right and has a light shirt with suspenders. George Carl Doolittle would have been around age 22 at the time of the photo. Also in the photograph in the very front of the group, is a young girl, Elberta Williams. Elbertas father, Robert Williams, had a blacksmith shop near the work site on a point known as Big Bend and sharpened and repaired tools for the road crew. Others in the photo have been identified as follows: front row (left to right), John Johnson, unknown man, Robert Williams, Bob Williams, and Charles Johnson. Second row: unidentified man (possibly George Carl Doolittle), John Wesley Doolittle, unidentified man (possibly George Carl Doolittle), an unknown man, Joe Sandbach, two unknown men, and Claude Evans. Back row: Tony Hellman, Abe Roudenbush, Mike Hellman, George Spath, two unknown men, George Hellman (wearing vest at rear), George Wolf (wearing large straw hat), and Edward McClure. |
