K&I Bridge postcard

Description: A postcard addressed to Mr. Ollie Straub of Corydon, Indiana, and postmarked 1908, featuring the original K&I Bridge over the Ohio River between New Albany, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky. The bridge, which accommodated both trains and horse-drawn vehicles, was constructed by the Kentucky and Indiana Bridge Company from 1881 to 1885 and opened in 1886. It had a single standard railroad track in the center with wagon ways on either side. This allowed horse-drawn vehicles and wagons to cross the river in a manner other than by ferry for the first time. After the bridge opened, the company offered a steam locomotive commuter train service, the Daisy Line, which became electrified in 1893. In 1910, the company, renamed the Kentucky & Indiana Terminal Railroad Company, began construction on a new bridge with a double rail track and the ability to handle automobile traffic. The new K&I Bridge was completed in 1912, and the original bridge was razed.
