Doolittle Hill construction crew

Description: A road construction crew ca. 1902 building Doolittle Hill Road, which winds down the knobs above Elizabeth, Indiana to Bridgeport. The road takes its name from John Wesley Doolittle, who was awarded the contract for the road work. Mr. Doolittle can be seen at the far right in the photo. He is the bearded man wearing suspenders who is standing alone with his hat in his hand and over his right, bent knee. His son George Carl Doolittle also worked on the project and later served as Harrison County Surveyor. Most of the workers were from the Elizabeth area. The men had no machinery, only hand tools and dynamite, to carve the road across the steep rocky hillside.
