Key, Bennet and Landon adv United States

United States vs Bennet Key and Landon

Description: This file contains 1 recognizance bond, 1 court cost bill and 1 subpoena in a case brought against Bennet Key and Landon Key for assault and battery on John Roberts. The recognizance bond, dated April 20, 1811, indicates that Bennet and Landon Key appeared before Isaac Montgomery, Esquire, and acknowledged to owe the United States $50 and $25 recognizance. The condition of the recognizance bond was that they appear before the Court of Common Pleas on the last Monday of July 1811 and keep the peace with John Roberts. The bond was signed by Montgomery. The court cost bill was for $5.24. The subpoena called for John Roberts to appear on the the first Monday of August 1811 and give evidence on behalf of the United States to the grand jury for assault and battery (committed by Bennet and Landon Key). The subpoena was witnessed and signed by court clerk Robert Buntin on July 31, 1811. The verso of this document indicates that sheriff Parmenas Beckes did not have time to execute the subpoena. The Minute Book of common Pleas 1811-1817 on page 15 states that Bennet and Landon Key did not appear and on motion of the attorney general the recognizance was forfeited.
