Oral history interview with John Vanada

Description: This is an oral history interview with John Vanada conducted on May 9, 2024 at the Parke County Public Library by Sally Curley. This recording tells of the original creation of the Tangier Buried Beef Community Project. John was instrumental in cooperation with the trustee, Mel Cruse and the Advisory board that included Paul Newnum and Marion Woods, who organized and started the Buried Beef operation in Tangier in 1977. The totally volunteer project, who provide desserts and workers operate out of the Tangier Community Center during the 10 days of the Covered Bridge Festival. Before becoming a resident of Parke County in 1975, John recollects coming to visit grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ray, farmer and auctioneer, and attend the Bridge Festival in the early days. He remembers a small stand near Mill Creek Bridge on his grandfathers property run by the Howard Baptist Church Ladies Aide. They offered home baked goods and ham and beans cooking over open fire. Locals provided some toilet facilities in the form of a latrine in the area. John explains the success of the project and its long standing volunteer presence during the Festival.
