Description: |
This is an oral history recorded by Karen Stutler on March 28, 2025 at the Parke County Public Library. Here, Karen, retells the story of her growing up the daughter of Earl and Stalker near Rosedale, Indiana in southern Parke County. She talks of visiting neighboring communities of Jessup and Diamond. A favorite aunt and uncle, Ruth and Paul Hawkins, entertained Karen as a young child, taking her to the many shops in Diamond. While living on a farm with the many farm chores, her father was also an auctioneer. This became a family business with her mother and older sister clerking for the auction and two older brothers assisting with moving, hauling and lifting the auction items. As the youngest of the family, Karens job was delivering tickets from the auctioneer to the clerks table. Karen enjoyed seeing all the old things at the auctions and feels this was the beginning of her second career as an antique dealer. After graduating from Rosedale High School and Indiana State University with a major in business, Karen married John Stutler in 1968. Karen taught school for many years, starting at Fountain Central and finishing at Turkey Run Jr-Sr High School as the Technology Coordinator. She and John had two sons Darin and Brad. Their two loving sons have given them 6 wonderful grandchildren, Macy, Maddy, Sam, Harry, Frank and Sally. John and Karen were married for 53 years before his passing in 2022. |
