Charlie Woodard oral history

Description: This is an oral history interview with Charlie Woodard conducted on January 28, 2020 by Morgan Newnum at the Parke County Public Library. This recording speaks of Charlies childhood, growing up in the Catlin and Bellmore areas of Parke County. He attended Bellmore High School where there were just 34 kids in the entire high school. The school gym was a mile from the high school and for after school practices, etc., students ran from the high school to the gym along what is now Highway 36. Schools were consolidated and he graduated from Rockville High School in 1961. His family operated an 800 acre farm including raising cattle and pigs. He describes the town of Bellmore, the Hickibee camp, where he and friends went fishing and camping. He talks of the formation of Raccoon Lake and the changes that made to the area. As a young boy, Charlie was a member of the 4-H club. He enjoyed showing cattle and pigs at the county fair. He recalls the fair being held around the square in Rockville using tents to house the animals. He was drafted and served 2 years in the army before returning home and marrying his wife Donna.
