Oral history interview with Marceil Chapman

Description: This is an oral history with Marceil Chapman, a life long resident of Parke County, conducted on January 30, 2020 at the Parke County Public Library by Landen Stewart. Marceil talks about her experiences growing up in the rural area by Bellmore and on a farm where there was no electricity until 1939 and her farther farmed with mules until the same year when he purchased his first tractor. She talks about what she did for fun, her church attendance and her involvement in 4H as a participant and later as a leader. She details her attendance and activities while at Union Township School and fondly remembers her English teacher, Mrs. Collings. There were 12 students in her graduating class. After marriage, Marceil helped her husband in their farm operation where they had chickens and pigs. Marceil with her first husband and later her second husband grew their farm by purchasing property when they were financially able to do so. Her children were involved in the farm activities learning self sufficiency and solid life skills. She and her children were also contributors to the Covered Bridge Festival. Marceil has been active in the community helping to start the Parke/Vermillion Pork Poducers participating in the Historical Society, 4H, and DAR to name only a few. She recalls the stores and businesses in the Bellmore and Rockville communities.
