Knox County court record for State of Indiana vs. Henry Anderson, 1850

Description: Folder 6965 in Box 129 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains six documents in the case of State of Indiana vs. Henry Anderson. During the August 1850 term the grand jury handed down an indictment for Henry Anderson, a man of color, on a charge of assault and battery with intent to murder Francis Hill, also a man of color. Hill testified that on July 1, 1850 Henry Anderson attacked him, knocking him to the ground and continued to batter him with a brick bat. The documents include the indictment, the affidavit of Hill, subpoenas for witnesses for the state (James Brunswick, Hester Hill, recognizance of witnesses, arrest warrant for Anderson, and jury finding. The case was closed with the jury finding Anderson guilty. They assessed him a fine of $1.00 and a sentence of imprisonment at the Indiana State Prison for two years.
