| Description: |
The record of the Knox County Overseers of the Poor (1821-1832) is housed at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House. It measures 7 ¾ inched wide x 12 ½ inches tall and contains 150 pages. Writing on the book’s outside covers is barely legible due to the marble cover design. Inside the back cover is written twice” Poor book for Vincennes Township, Knox County, Indiana. While various business is recorded in this book, agreements regarding how to deal with individuals in need, including indenture and apprentice agreements are the largest part. These were paid for by the township or county and awarded to the lowest bidder. In 1822 planning began for the construction of a poor-house on the town commons. In September of 1823 the poor house was examined and found to be agreeable to the contract. The building was received from George Dennet, the undertaker who was apparently also a contractor. Dennet was the lowest bidder at $899.00. Other bidders: George Simpson, Joshua Bond; John Moore, David Welton, Thomas Blackburn and Jeremiah and William, Coleman; The diagram appears to show a four-room house measuring 34 ft. square. |
