Knox County court record for John Howards mental illness hearing, 1850

Description: Folder 6963 in Box 129 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains only one document in the case of John Howard insanity hearing. On April 23, 1850 Albert McMurry filed his complaint under oath in front of Justice of the Peace, Samuel Thompson stating the John Howard, a man of color was believed to be insane and dangerous to the community. A group of local men became appointed jurors to hear the case. Evidence was heard and the jury determined that Howard was indeed insane. On April 26, 1850 Thompson issued an order to William Scott to take charge of Howard and to keep him under proper restraint and furnish him with proper food, clothing and lodging until further orders were given Scott from the court. The single document is the transcript of the hearing.
