Knox County court record for White vs. Smith, 1821 (case 1)

Description: Folder 2733 in Box 48 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds two documents in the case of Charles White vs. William Smith, 1821, a man of color. This case was one of debt litigation. Charles White stated that William Smith owed him $17.50. A hearing had taken place in January of 1821 and the judgement was against Smith. Smith did not pay so White asked for another hearing. The court sent a letter to the sheriff to have Smith picked up and returned to court. On the back of that letter is stated that Smith was not living in Knox County. The two documents in the file are the letter sent to the sheriff explaining the case, and the transcript from the hearing.
