He was a member of theTurnverein for many years and alwayssaid, I must thank the South BendTurners for giving me my start in physicalexercises.Turner Paul Bever was a bowler for5 7 years and had ·a very fine record insports which any Turner would be proudto possess. In 1887 he won the TurnerGold Medal for best all-around gymnastand athlete; in 1888 the Y. M. C. A.medal for the same. The same year hewon the first prize for best all-aroundathlete at the l\Iid-west Turner meet atChicago and at the National Turnermeet at Cincinnati, took 2nd placein Club Swinging. At ~otre Dameopen meet he won first prize in polevault and 2nd prize in broad jump. In1892 he took first place in pole vault atNotre Dame, setting the State record, then, at 11 10. In Bowling, he tookpart in many National and State meetsand held the city single championshipfor 191 7, which he also held at TurnerHall in 1940.In passina away, the Turners havelost a very active and old Turner, whoseinterests were such that he representedthe South Bend Turners at the Springfield,Mass. Turnfest this past June, when he gave several exhibitions in ClubSwinging. Very few Turners in theirlives can add to Turner Beyers efforts. His achievements should be an inspirationto young Turners of today.Turner Beyers, may you rest in peace.MAKE SURE that the South BendTurner reaches you - if you havemoved recently, please notify us of yournew address!PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS!THEY MAKE THIS PAPER POSSIBLE.YOU GET THE BESTWHEN YOU BUYKUSS BUTTERNUTBREADNov., 1941GYM CLASSESWell, the cold weather seems to bedriving more students into my clas es.T~at old saying The more the merrier, still holds true as far as our classes go.My luck with the weather has certainlybeen: aood. Certainlysounded good, although it would havebeen better if the gang would havesang along with you instead of 4 measuresahead.Met some of our Turner boys on leavefrom Camp, namely, Chet Kistler,Bob Williams and Bill Williamson.Looks like the wedding bells are goingto claim most of those boys. They rangfor Chet Thursday nite. Must writeto private Boxwell, who is now aleatherneck. Things sure do happenfast.Don t forget, November 9th, JuniorTurnday.
