Harris-Harris V-mail

Description: Letter from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre.
May 28, 1944Dear Alice,I still haven’t received any mail so really I don’t have much to write. I got your bracelet mailed last Thursday. It is very hot here today. I washed clothes this morning and stayed under the shower for quite awhile [sic]. I ate a large meal and walked down to my company to check the mail. I’m in some friend’s tent writing. They are in a hot chess game. The kind that each player sits for an hour before he moves. I went to the show last night. It was Claudia and it was rotten. Smith baked cookies last night so we had a bunch after the show. I wish I had something to do this afternoon. I imagine you feel the same way. I’m going to church tonight. My job here is very easy. We get some fresh meat but it is mostly opening cans. Occasionally we make a chocolate pudding using flour instead of corn starch and water in place of milk. It is very delicious. I heard a lot of mail came in today so I’m going to check again tonight.Love, Harold
