Letter from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre. June 16, 1944Dear Alice, Now June 16th is some date to remember. Either Vi & Bill were married or we moved to Lafontaine on that date. Everything is going as it usual with me. I’m still waiting to join my division. I fooled around all morning and then after dinner went to the ocean. That is one fine thing to be able to go swimming. Yesterday I read a book called “Uninvited” and last night went to the show. It was “Four Jills in a Jeep” with glamorous Kay Francis. It was very good. It seems strange to write letters and know you can’t receive mail. It certainly makes one feel he is alone in this world. In the show last night Carole Landis wore a blouse which made me think of you. A plain Vneck [sic] with ruffles down the side. When I get home we’ll get you one like it. Hacker, Hirsch, and I have been talking about old times at Blanding. Our stove smoking just before inspection Hollinstein forgetting to put his spring into his rifle at the last inspection. We didn’t realize what fun we were having. Love, Harold |
