Harris-Harris letter

Description: Letter from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre.
March 13, 1944Dear Alice, Susan & Mother,I received my first letter today. It was post marked March 6th and sent airmail. Until today I thought it couldn’t be helped that our mail didn’t get to us but now I don’t know. Our mail orderly can’t even read the simple name of Harris. The boys who have more than 6 letters in their names will never get their mail. Anyway I was glad to get the letter and hope to be lucky enough to receive more.Everything is pretty much the same. I took in a U.S.O stage show at the service club last night. It was fair. We are promised at least one pass soon. I’ll be so glad to get away even if it’s only for a few hours. I’m glad Susan likes the moccasins. I thought she could wear them as house slippers when she was older. I knew they were too big. I imagine she will be the center of interest at the dinner. I wonder if any of the snap shots were good that we took. If I can get to the photographer here I may have a picture taken & then you can dispose of those you have. I will probably send some money later on too. But will it until I see what I need.I’m still in the states and feel OK. Today I’m complaining about the mail. It is disgusting that men over 30 can’t read or speak English. All my love, HaroldI threw the money belt away. I was stung.
