St. Johns Episcopal Church

Description: St. Johns Episcopal Church held its first services as early as 1845 in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Chamberlain. In 1873 a small structure was built on the northeast corner of Lexington Ave. (formerly Pigeon St.) and Third Street. Larger facilities were needed by 1895 and the little church building was moved to the northwest corner of Marion and Third Streets to make way for the present structure. Services were first held in this building at 226 W. Lexington Ave. in the summer of 1896. The building was designed by A.H. Ellwood of Bristol and the exterior was constructed of native fieldstone.
