Elkhart's Tyler Street once featured several impressive buildings in the vicinity of the NYC depot, most notably the New Kaiserhof Hotel, distinct in Photo 1 because of its tower. Also visible are the Depot Hotel, just beyond the Kaiserhof, and the second Railroad YMCA, which is the large building in the distance. Of all the buildings seen in Photo 1, only the depot survives today. The entire block in the right foreground was razed to provide space for the new post office complex in 1965, including the parking lot, seen in the second photo. |
