This is a digitized recording of a dictabelt, which the Indianapolis Fire Department used to record dispatch calls during the 1960s and 1970s. Following are the calls on this dictabelt: 1) Several callers concerned about sewer flow near their homes south of the explosion, dispatcher assures them spilled gas is flowing away from their homes. 2) Dispatcher calls to check on sewer flow, learns the sewer flows north from Hillside and then west at 30th street where it flows to the drain. 3) Squad 14 reports positive readings for gas at 30th and Martindale, heading to 32nd and Scofield. Dispatcher relays findings to Car 1. 3) Squad 14 reports explosive reading at 32nd and Scofield. 4) Frank at Citizens Gas calls to find out exact area of explosions. 5) Swisher at the Safety Board calls to find out situation on Hillside, Dispatcher informs him there have been no more explosions yet, trying to narrow down situation and flush gas into Fall Creek. Second alarm, 15 or so pieces of equipment at scene. Some fire observed in sewer. 6) Extended discussion about a transmitter stuck open. 7) Caller requests help at 711 W 31st for flooding from pipe overflow, dispatcher tells her to call a plumber. 8) Woman asks about explosion area, dispatcher assures her that her home is safe and she should be able to get home. 9) Car 4 requests detector batteries, dispatcher relates message to shop.
