This is a digitized recording of a dictabelt, which the Indianapolis Fire Department used to record dispatch calls during the 1960s and 1970s. Following are the calls on this dictabelt: 1) Engine reports that all people around 28th and Grouse should be evacuated. Sewers in the area are clogged with smoke and gas. 2) More explosions reported at 30th and Caroline, all the way along 30th street. Dispatcher will contact command post. 3) Caller asks if state knows about explosions, asks if police could be sent to protect houses evacuated due to explosions from looting. 4) Caller suggests National guard be called to guard evacuated houses. 5) Caller asks what flood area is being evacuated after explosions, from 24th St. north to 32nd, and (unclear) to Baltimore 5) Caller asks if Car 4 will need further assistance from shop. Dispatcher passes on message. 6) Dispatcher makes several calls looking for maps of sewer system showing which direction theyre flowing around the area of the explosions. Dispatcher reaches an engineer at sewer department who explains the direction and flow of the sewer system near the explosion area (Hillside Avenue from 25th up to 29th and beyond) to where it empties into Fall Creek. 7) Dispatcher informs chief all sewers north of 25th street flow north to 30th St, from 34th street they flow south to 30th St, and then west into Fall Creek. 8) Dispatcher calls Board of Sanitation again, recording ends.
