Description: This is a digitized recording of a dictabelt, which the Indianapolis Fire Department used to record dispatch calls during the 1960s and 1970s. Following are the calls on this dictabelt: 1) Discussion about 1000 gallons of gasoline spilled from storage tanks at filling station near 25th St. and Sherman Dr. 2) (several calls unintelligible) 3) Caller reports explosions on N Hillside in 2700 block and north, manhole covers blowing off. Blowing chunks out of street, caller did know if houses were affected. 4) Mrs. Smith, at Hillside and 27th, reports explosions. She affirms explosions were in the street. 5) Caller asks if gas spilled at 25th and Sherman was flushed down the sewer. 6) Dispatcher sends investigator to 2700 block of Hillside to check on sewers. 7) Dispatcher calls engine at filling station near 25th and Sherman to tell them to stop dumping gasoline into sewer. 8) Caller asks if Ed is cleaning up the mess on Hillside, asks for fire prevention. 9) Service station at 25th and Keystone, caller asks if gas was flushed there. Dispatcher corrects caller, gas was flushed at 25th and Sherman, not sure how gas got all the way over to Hillside. Strong odor of gas at Hillside explosions, considering evacuated residents. 10) Indianapolis News calls to ask about the explosions up on Hillside, dispatcher says they heard there was an explosion at 2700 block of Hillside and had no other details. Recording ends at 3:20 PM.
