Frederick P. Griffin in Porter-Griffin house, Corydon, Indiana, 1981

Description: Frederick Porter Griffin, son of Maurice and Charlotte Griffin and grandson of Patrick and Helen Porter Griffin, stands near a fireplace in the Porter-Griffin house in July 1981. The two-story brick dwelling just off the square in downtown Corydon, Indiana, was built in 1817 and served as the home and headquarters of Governor William Hendricks from 1822 to 1825. Judge William A. Porter and his wife Elizabeth McClelland purchased the house in 1841. They raised seven daughters in the home and continued to live in the large brick house until their deaths. Their sixth daughter, Helen, married local merchant Patrick Griffin and inherited the home. Helen and Patrick Griffin raised seven children in the home: Margaret, William Maurice, Mary Jane, Olive, Annis, Helen Elizabeth, and Daniel Patrick. Five of the seven never married and resided much of their adult lives in the Porter-Griffin house. Dan was the last to live in the home. After his death in 1975, the State of Indiana acquired the property to be used as a historic house museum. The house was open to the public on a limited basis for a short time and then closed for restoration in late 1977 through 1979. The house reopened in October 1979 and was rededicated as the Governor William Hendricks Headquarters to reflect its earlier history as the residence and office of Indianas third governor.
