Helen Porter Griffin sits outside Porter-Griffin house, Corydon, Indiana

Description: Helen Porter Griffin sits outside her home on East Walnut Street in Corydon, Indiana. Around her shoulders is a striped shawl purchased on her wedding trip in 1871. The two-story, brick dwelling was constructed in 1817 and was home and headquarters to Indianas third governor, William A. Hendricks, during the 1820s. Helen Porter Griffin was born in the house in 1844 as the sixth of seven daughters of Judge William A. Porter and Elizabeth McClelland Porter. In addition to her childhood, Helen also lived in the home much of her adult life, and along with her husband, Patrick Griffin, raised seven children there. Patrick died in 1917, and Helen died in 1940 at the age of 96. Several of Helen and Patricks children never married and continued to live in the home as adults. The youngest child, Daniel P. Griffin, was the last to reside in the Porter-Griffin home. Following his death in 1975, the Griffin family sold the property to the State of Indiana for use as an historic site. It was renamed the Governor William A. Hendricks Headquarters to reflect its earlier history.
