Porter-Griffin House, Corydon, Indiana

Description: The Porter-Griffin house on East Walnut Street in Corydon, Indiana. The two-story, brick dwelling was constructed in 1817 and served as the home and headquarters of Indianas third governor, William A. Hendricks, from 1822-1825. Judge William A. Porter purchased the house in 1841 and he and his wife, Elizabeth McClelland Porter, raised seven daughters in the home. Their sixth daughter, Helen, married local merchant Patrick Griffin in 1871. A year later, her mother passed away, and the young couple moved into the home to care for her father. Helen inherited the property when Judge Porter died in 1884. Patrick and Helen Porter Griffin resided in the house the remainder of their lives and raised seven children, several of which continued to live in the family home their entire adult lives as well. Patrick Griffin died in 1917, and Helen lived to be 96, passing away in 1940. Three of their adult children. Mary Jane, Olive, and Daniel, remained in the home and were joined in 1948 by their sister Helen OLeary after her husbands death. Daniel P. Griffin, the youngest of the seven Griffin children, was the last to live in the family home and died at age 90 in 1975. The Griffin heirs then transferred the property to the State of Indiana for use as an historic site. The name of the house was changed to the Governor William A. Hendricks Headquarters to reflect its earlier history.
