The file contains documents that relate to the suit the United States brought against Jeremiah Coleman for selling whiskey, cyder, and cyder Royal without having obtained a license. During the March Term 1812 of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas, G. W. Johnston, Prosecutor for Knox County presented the Grand Jurys Indictment of Jeremiah Cole, trader. According to the Indictment, after the 20th day of February in 1812 through the 14th day of March at Vincennes in a store or stand, Coleman did take it upon himself to vend and sell whiskey, cyder or cyder Royal by the small by a smaller quantity than two gallons and that suffered to be drank and not having previously obtained a license in contempt of the United States the Law of the Territory. On the verso side of the Indictment, True Bill, Walter Wilson, foreman.A Summons was issued for the sheriff to take Jeremiah Coleman so that he would appear before the Judges in the Court of Common Pleas to answer to a bill of Indictment prepared against him for retailing spirits and other liquors by the small measure contrary to the law. The Summons was issued by R [Robert] Buntin, Clerk, CCPKC on March 16, 1812. The summons was executed by John I. Neely, D. Sheriff with court costs of $.59 for executing the summons. On the same day a Subpoena was issued for Sergeant Furbush of the United States Army to appear before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas now sitting to give evidence on behalf of the United States. The Subpoena was also issued by R. Buntin and it was executed by John I. Neely, D. Sheriff with $.37 added as court costs. A listing of the court costs and fees totaled $23.19 1/2. According to the Minute Book of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas 1811 - 1817 page 24; The Defendant was brought to court and the Indictment read to him. The Defendant pleaded guilty to the charges and put himself on the mercy of the court. It was ordered that the Defendant pay a fine of $12.00 and stand committed until the fine and costs were paid. He was delivered over to the sheriff. |
