Road petition Cathlinette prairie 1808

Road petition for lower prairie 1808

Description: The file contains the petition dated November 30, 1808 of the inhabitants of the lower prairie in Knox County asking to have the road altered to higher ground. The petitioners in the Prairie below Vincennes (Cathlinette Prairie) stated that in peculiar circumstances the Public Road through their land in the prairie was extremely injurious to them and without any benefit to the Public. The ground over which the said road had been laid out was so low and in wet seasons so impractical that passengers quit the ordinary way and trespassed on the arable lands of the petitioners. That in a distance of near two miles the road crossed the land of no less than 20 of the petitioners which they were convinced it will be considered by the court as a very great grievance. So much of the road ran over the petitioners lands it ought to be vacated and a road ought to be laid out on vacant lands at the south east end of their grants to the branch from River DeChys (Deshee) Road and extend along the fence of the petitioners lands to the settlement at the Catherinety (Cathlinette) Prairie which could be made practicable at all seasons at a very small change of labor. Signed: Will McIntosh, Richardville, L. Deloier, Dagneau, Valle Jr., Page, Pierre Boncan, L. Barois, Mallet Jr., Denayon Jr, Anto. Chapard, E. DuBois, F. Hamlin, Valle Sr., F. Languedo. According to the Minute Book of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas 1807 -1810, pages 140, 153, 161; during the November Term 1808 the petition of inhabitants of the Lower Prairie asked for altering the road which ran through the said prairie from Vincennes to the Cathellenette (Cathlinette) Prairie to over the high land on the south east of the lower prairie. It was ordered that William McIntosh, Jean Bpt. Deloric, Francois Rasicatt, Francois Valle, and Toussaint Dageau be the appointed viewers and measure the ground over which the road was intended and make a report for the February Term. The report was read twice and on page 161, it was ordered that the surveyor be allowed for surveying the said two roads and returning the plat at a rate of two dollars and fifty cents per mile and that the petitioners pay the same.
