Chenet, Zephrin petition recommending as constable 1810

Description: The file contains a petition of French residents of Vincennes requesting Zephrin Chenet be considered as constable. The petition stated that residents in Vincennes have been much injured and oppressed by illegal conduct of men here to fore appointed constable in the township whom the aggrieved have fore born to prosecute for want of pecuniry and other means. The petitioners being equally desirous to aid in the regular execution of law process and to prevent oppression deem it proper to recommend to the court such persons as appear to us fit to discharge the duties of constables in this township, acknowledging at the same time that by the existing laws, however improvidently made that the right to select and appoint appertains exclusive to the courts. We therefore respectfully recommend Zephrin Chenet for the office of constable in the township for the present year. Vincennes March 3, 1810. The following names were signed by their marks: Toussaint Dagnault, Joseph Joycuse , Jean Bpt. Bonnaut, Gerome Erely, Charles Lachene, Joseph Villeneuse, Jacque Cardinalle, Jean Bapt. La Moyse, Francois Gaudert, Fran Byer (?), Andre Racine, Jean Bpt. Barrois, Lambert Barrois, Pierre Andre dit Bewothe, Amble Ballon, Charles Soudriette, Toussaint Denault, Pierre Cartier, franois Naller fils, amble arpin, Louis Boyer, Rene Canygot, Joseph Deline. The following signed their names: Hythe. Lasselle, a. Dagenay, amble arpin, ant. Drouettu, f. Racieo (?), Louis Mavaletu, Joseph Barron, Jean Bpt. Debouir. According to the Minute Book of the Knox County Court of Common Plea 1807-1810, page 237, It was ordered that Zephrin Chenett be and hereby appointed constable of Vincennes Township for the ensuing year and that he take the oath of office before Gen. W. Johnston, Esq. and enter into bond with approved security conditions as the law direct.
