White River Township petition to divide

Description: The file contains the petition of inhabitants living in the Eastern part of White River Township asking for a division of the county. The inhabitants living in the Eastern part of White River Township reported that they labored under great inconvenience being compelled to travel from fifteen to forty miles to attend every election and the same distance for the recovery of a debt or defend a suit before a Justice of the Peace. They asked the Court to divide the township into two townships. Ceding all that lies east of Conger Brook into a new Township. Coleman, Jacob Scarmahorn, John Coonrod, George Conrod, Bryan D. Saverns, Jaremiah Arnold , Jonathan Arnold, Jonathan Walker, John Miley, Thos. Walker, Isaac Walker, Henry Miley, Walter Jerrell, Augustin Friend, John J. Wilson, Silis Reyley, and Jam. Kuykendall. According to the Minute Book of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas 1807-1810 page 267, a petition from a number of the inhabitants living in the forks of White River asked a township be laid off between the said forks. It was ordered that the petitioners be granted their request and that the township be bounded by the two main branches of the White River and named Hawkins Township and that the elections in the township be held at the House of William Purcell.
