A memorandum is filed in the Knox County Court of Common Pleas. It states that John Lewis, a free black man of Knox County Indiana Territory and Peter Jones of the same came before William Jones, Justice of the Peace and each of them acknowledged themselves indebted to the U. S. in the sum of $100. The fee is to be levied severally on each of their respective goods and chattels lands and tenements to the said use of the U. S. Upon conditions that the said John Lewis does personally appear before the judges of the Court of Common Pleas to be held July next. They are not to depart the said county without leave and to keep the peace and be good to all people good humor to all. It is also stated particularly good to John Gibson, Esq. If they do as commanded then recognizance will be void otherwise it will remain in full force. The recognizance bond was dismissed. |
