Description: |
This is a black and white photograph of the damage done to the Parke County Jail in Rockville, Indiana in July 1977. The upstairs back section was virtually destroyed. The fire was thought to have been started by an inmate brought into the jail that day on a drunk and disorderly charge. Evidence showed the fire did begin in the cell where the man was being held. He did not survive. Rockvilles original jail was a log structure built in 1824. It was replaced by a frame and brick building in 1832. In 1879, the Italianate style brick building was built on the corner of High and Jefferson Streets by the firm of Thomas J. Tolin and Son of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the same firm that built the court house. It served as the county jail until 1998 when the new jail was opened. Behind the jail is a boiler house which heated not only the jail but the courthouse. It was also the site of the last hanging in Parke County, that of Joseph Buck Stout in 1883. This item was donated by Charles Davis. |
