| Description: |
This is a colored photograph of the Phillips Covered Bridge in Wabash Township in Parke County, Indiana. Spanning Rocky Run Creek also called Big Pond Creek, the bridge was built by Joseph A. Britton in 1909. A saw mill was set up on the nearby Benjamin Phillips property to saw the timber and lumber for the bridge. The Phillips house can be seen in the background. The bridge is 43 feet long and 16 feet wide, making it the smallest covered bridge in the county. It has king truss posts instead of the typical burr arch. The west or downstream truss was reinforced with an iron beam. Arabia Church which once stood on the hill above the bridge is gone but Arabia Cemetery which was near the church still exists. This item was donated by Charles Davis. |
