Parke County Jail 1977 fire damage.

Description: This is a color photograph of the Parke County Jail in Rockville, Indiana showing the fire damage done in July 1977. The jail sits at the corner of High and Jefferson Streets on the town square. The fire, set by an inmate, virtually destroyed the back upstairs interior and gutted the north part of the upstairs. The jail, done in the Italianate style, was built in 1879 by the firm Thomas J. Tolin and Son of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the same firm which constructed the court house. The porch across the front was added later. The stack of the boiler house can be seen just above the jails roof line to the rear. This heated not only the jail but the court house. The original jail was built in 1824 and made of logs. It was replaced in 1832 by one of frame and brick. The restored and renovated jail was reopened in 1979. It continued to serve the county until replaced by the new jail which opened in 1998 just west of Rockville. This item was donated by Charles Davis.
