Description: |
This is a color photograph of what was once the Ensey Hotel. Built by Samuel T. Ensey on Lot 2 in Annapolis, Parke County, Indiana it was also known as the Franklin Hotel. The hotels ledger still exists and the first recorded date is 26 September 1871. Several dignitaries stayed there among them Andrew Johnson and General Ulysses S. Grant in 1873 and Rutherford B. Hayes who had room 16. The last ledger date was 22 May 1878. The Enseys fell on hard times and most of their property went to auction. Years later, Christopher Goshorn bought the hotel, tore it down and re-purposed the lumber, building a house on a 40 acre tract near Bloomingdale. This house now stands along US 41 on the dividing line of Penn and Washington townships. Samuel Thompson Ensey (1811-1887) was the son of John and Sarah Thompson Ensey. He married Elizabeth Harris (1825-1902) on 1841-03-04. This item was donated by Charles Davis. |
