Knox County, Indiana Circuit Court record for Mary Rollins vs. George Rollins, 1866

Description: Folder 8786 in Box 173 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains two documents in the case of Mary Rollins vs. George W. Rollins. During the August, 1866 term of the Knox County Circuit Court Mary A. Rollins, a woman of color filed for divorce from George W. Rollins, a man of color. Mary told the court she had been married to George and they had lived together for ten years until he abandoned her. She stated that since he left he had failed to provide any support to her or their children. She asked the court to grant her a divorce from him. The two documents in the folder are her complaint to the court and an answer from the defendant denying her allegations. On the back of the complaint document is a statement from J.C. Denny stating that the defendant was not a resident of the state of Indiana.
