Folder 2951 in Box 53 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains seven documents in the case of State of Indiana vs. Norton, 1822. William Norton appeared in court on December 23, 1821 before John Doty, presiding judge, for attempting to take a woman of color, Kate, out of the state of Indiana. The date of the incident is not included. He was to pay a surety fee or bond of $500.00. Richard Price and John Teeples (or Teeple) agreed to pay the fee for Norton. On February 25, 1822, Norton was assaulted by a group of 100 or so men who whipped him with switches severely injuring his back. After they battered him they took him to a farmhouse of John Dunlap on the Illinois prairie and left him at the gate. The farmer later testified to the court that he tried to help Norton by cleaning his back with whisky and binding it with cotton and bandages. Norton told the farmer that he was going to Missouri as quick as he could and inquired as to which direction he should go. He ultimately “took off to the woods.” Price and Teeples appeared at court and asked that they not be penalized and made to pay the surety fees. The jury found in their favor. Their case was heard by John McCord on May 25, 1822. The documents consist of the deposition by the farmer, statement of recognizance for $500.00, statement by Price and Teeples to delay the trial, date that Teeples and Price were to appear, pleas by Teeples and Price, and trial transcripts. This case is related to Folder 2750 in Box 49 of Knox County Circuit Court records, State of Indiana vs. Norton, 1822. A deposition by John Dunlap dated August 30, 1822 details Dunlaps care of Norton’s wounds. “…four switches to the amount of sixty-too lashes.” Cleaned with whiskey and wrapped with carded cotton and handkerchiefs. “he was going to Mesura as quick as he could hew also enquired the different crossing places on the Ambarass.” (Embarrass River.) Dunlap’s farm was on ground originally claimed by Toussaint Dubois. |
