Description: Folder 2750 in Box 49 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds four documents in the case of State of In. vs. Norton, 1822. William Norton was indicted for kidnapping Catherine Guathney (Gualtney), “Katy”, a woman of color. Norton was accused of having taken her with force and arms with intent to take her out of the state without first establishing the claim of ownership her alleged owner Cornelius Taylor. The same document goes onto make the same charge but calling Susan Jones the owner of Katy. The four documents include the indictment of the grand jury, and three subpoenas sent to the sheriff on 7-22-1822, 2-11-1823, and 6-12-1823, each returned saying Norton was not found in Knox County.
