Knox County court record for Taylor vs. Reily (re. Rhody), 1822

Description: Folder 3011 in Box 54 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains six documents in the case of Taylor vs. Reily, 1822. This case involves Rhody Taylor, a woman of color petitioning for the freedom of herself, her husband Jonathon and their three children George, Charles and Charlotte from Owen Reily. Reily received the indenture from Aaron Decker (Gibson County) on January 29, 1816. Rhody, 21 years of age at the time) signed the indenture of 40 years with Decker on November 28 of 1815. Rhody asked the court for a writ of habeas corpus for her and her children so that they would gain their freedom from Reilly. The documents consist of writs of habeas corpus, Reily’s statements, Taylor’s petition to the court and the indenture contract between Rhody and Aaron Decker. The indenture states that in addition to “liberating her from absolute slavery,” Decker would provide Rhody with a wheel, a cow and calf and cards. While the documents state that at least one of the documents is missing, it appears that Rhody’s children were indentured to overseers of the poor in Vincennes and Johnson townships.
