A debatebetween this society and the Alethenai willprobably be arranged later.ORATORICAL CONTEST.There is to be an oratorical contest held inNormal Hall some time near the close of thisterm, open to all students of the State Normal.Competitors are to choose their own subjectsand the theme, not to consist of more than2,000 words.The winner of the local contest shall be therepresentative of the Normal School in the Inter-State contest, which will also be held herein June. Those interested in Oratory are urgedto see Prof. Lardner for particulars. It is verydesirous that a great interest be shown in thiscontest as it will mean much to our school.MRS. MARY A. CRAWFORD.General sorrow in the Normal High Schooland among many of our students was causedby the death of Mrs. Mary Antoinette Crawford, mother of Miss Elizabeth Crawford, headof the English Department in Normal HighSchool. Mrs. Crawford passed away after alingering illness, December 7,1908, at her home,718 South Sixth Street, where the funeral washeld December 9. The High School was dismissed and attended the funeral in a body. TheAdvance in behalf of the Faculty and students,extends its sympathies to Miss Crawford inher sad bereavement.LOCALMiss Grace Graves, who was a student herelast term, was married to Mr. Charles Brownof Anderson, January 2. The wedding was asurprise to her many friends who wish theyoung couple a happy wedded life.Mr. Cecil A. Grayson, 07, who is principalof Culver High School, was a visitor Jan. 2.Miss Isabel Cadden, 08, visited her parentsduring the holidays. Miss Cadden is teachingHistory and Latin in the Orleans High School.Miss Estelle Doerschuk was an out-of-townguest at the Alpha Delta Sigma Fraternitydance, which was given in Indianapolis atWoodroof Place, December 29.Mrs. Samuel Markley and son, Paul, ofMontpelier, are the guests of Mrs. Markleysmother, Mrs. Hilton, 328 North Fifth Street.Mr. Christopher Cauble, 08, was a TerreHaute visitor during the holidays. Mr. Caubleis teaching History in Paragon High School.Mr. William Kamman, who was forced togo home last term on account of illness, is againin school.Professor Baxter attended an educationalrally which was held at Noblesville January 22.He also acted as one. of the judges in a musicalcontest which was on the program.Messrs. Fred McKeehan, 07, and LawrenceHurst, 08, w^ere mingling with old I. S. N.friends at the beginning of this term. Bothare attending Indiana University.Very appropriate Christmas exercises wererendered by the pupils of the training and highschool, December 18, at which the attendanceof parents and interested visitors was verylarge. The entire program was given in a mostgratifying manner and the entertainers werevigorously applauded for their efforts.The students and friends of Miss KatherineStaff were greatly shocked to hear of the STid-den death of her mother, which occurred Jan.7, at the home in North Ninth Street, Miss |
