and of the Junior-Sophomore, Messrs. LeroyJames and W. H. Cain, Juniors, and S. C. Morrill, Sophomore. These young men, all of whomare members of some debating society, showedthe excellent training they had received, bytheir technical knowledge and logical organization of their arguments, which can be secured alone through experience before thepublic or in good debating societies.President Parsons presided as Chairman,and Messrs. Clarence Royse, Herbert Briggs,and Rev. Hixon officiated as judges. The audience was also favored with several solos byMiss Orrelle Fidlar.One fact was well brought out by the debateand that is: Normal has the material for agood debating team, and no one should be surprised if I. S. N. carries off first honors in thecontest with Illinois Normal.THE STATE TEACHERSASSOCIATION.The fifty-fifth annual session of the IndianaState Teachers Association, which was held inIndianapolis, December 29, 30 and 31, broughtout very forcibly the fact that the influence ofthe Indiana State Normal is very great in educational affairs, if a review of its Faculty,members and Alumni who took part in thegeneral program is to be considered. Eightmembers of our Faculty and nineteen of ourAlumni acted in various capacities on the program.Of our Faculty, Prof. Kemp was President ofthe Grammar Grade Section, and Prof. Daubach discussed a paper on manual trainingread before this same section. Prof. Engle-men read a paper Nepos in the High School:An Old Experiment Tried Anew, in the Classical Section
Prof. Charman gave a short discussion on Subject Matter in the Institute Instructors Section. Prof. Baxter was Presidentand Prof. Higgins discussed a paper in theMathematics Section
and Prof. Lardner wasPresident and Miss Robinson read a paper,Reading in the Intermediate Grades, in theElocution and Reading Section.The Chairman of the Executive Committeewas W. H. Sanders, 88

A.and S. I. T. A., and the appointment of a committee to study the question of Teachers Pensions, which is to report at a later session.Dr. Aley, State Superintendent-elect, waschosen president for the coming year.A great many of our students were presentat the meeting, and among our Faculty the following were in attendance: President Parsons,Dr. Schlicher, Professors Charman, KelsoWisely, Stalker, Baxter, Weng, Higgins,Kemp, Swihart, Lardner, Engleman, Bonsall,McBeth and Robinson.PHILOMATHEAN LITERARY SOCIETYOn Saturday morning, January 16, 1909,Prof. J. L. Lardner, organized a literary society for the young women of the Normal,which was given the name, Philomathean Literary Society. Mr. Lardner discussed the natureof the work of the society and offered a constitution which he had made for the society. MissPipenbrink and Miss Lamb were elected president and secretary pro tern. The constitutionoffered by Mr. Lardner was discussed andadopted, with a few changes. The following
