Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE13&tf)lettcsiWith the opening of the school year, prepa¬
rations are again being made for an active year
m athletics at the Indiana State Normal School. From the first day of school the followers of
the blue and white have been busy in arousing
the interest of the new men, promoting school
spirit and planning the seasons campaign.
The Athletic Association is again being or¬
ganized, and every student is expected to be¬
come a member at the first opportunity. Mem¬
bership in the association places the student
among the leading members of the school and
gives a terms admission to all athletic contests
held under the auspices of the association.Parsons Field has been improved during the
vacation, and is in splendid condition. A new
straightaway has been constructed in front of
the grand stand, and the tennis courts have been
smoothed until they are fifty per cent, better
than last year. Tennis Manager Koch has been
busy during the last few days seeking for tennis
men who might be able to place the Indiana
State Meet next spring. Track Manager Hynd-
man is actively making preparations for the
Annual Cider Meet, to be held during the first
of November. A number of the participants
of last years meet are in school, but the Sopho¬
mores have a number of strong men and prom¬
iseto make a very creditable showing, but the
College Course seems to be selected as the win¬
ner by the majority of the student body. The
meet was won last year by the Seniors with the
College Course two points behind. Manager
Hyndman is very anxious that every man
would try out for his class in some event. It
makes no difference if you have never before
been in an athletic contest, daily coaching will
be given, and the class having several men in
each event will stand a much better show of
winning. First, second and third prize rib¬
bons will be awarded in each event, and thelarge champion ribbon will be given to the
man winning the largest number of points.
Last year this was awarded to John Fortner, a
Junior. On Saturday, November 15, in connec¬
tion with the Terre Haute Corn Show, the
Booster Club will hold a five-mile Marathon
race. Last year Normal men won five places
out of ten, and incidently had the better of a
mild fistic encounter with our neighbors of the
Rose Polytechnic School. It is expected that
even a better showing will be made this year. After the track meet all attention will turn
to basketball, interclass and intercollegiate.
Here the prospects are the brightest that Nor¬
mal has known for years, if ever before. Clark,
Stiffler, and Knauth, stars of last years team,
are again in school, and a splendid lot of new
material is present. Manager Wright is now
planning the schedule for this season, and will
have at least two games this term. But with good men and good equipment, we
must have good support by the student body
in order to be successful in athletics. The spirit
of the school is what counts. The athletic as¬
sociation depends upon the students for its
financial support, and athletics depends upon
the athletic association for funds. Pay the
athletic fee at once, become a member of the
athletic association, push for the Indiana State
Normal School and results will tell. We are
going out for the secondary championship of
the state in basketball and with the support of
every student in school Ave will get there. If
you know of a man that you think could make
the team tell the manager of him. If he is in
school he will be given every opportunity, or
if he is not in school use all influence to bring
him in. But dont forget that you are one that
will be responsible for the success or failure
of the Normal in athletics this year.
