The Auction Sale

Description: This painting is another installment of The Auction Sale series of scenes. There are three buildings in the painting including a farmhouse, a lunch shed, and a large red barn. The farmhouse is on the left side of the painting. It is white with a green roof and has a pink flowering vine climbing up the visible side. The lunch shed is located at the end of the lane is white with a black roof. The sign on the left side of the building read Lunch in black. There are two women serving lunch at a counter right inside the doors. A man stands in front of them in all black buying a serving. The barn is deep red on the right side of the painting with a brown/green roof and a stone foundational level. Behind the buildings, there is a line of detailed trees in a horse pasture. In front of the large red barn, a pile of golden hay for feeding animals sits in the enclosed pasture. Three kids slide down the side of the haystack into the pasture which is a regular game played by children in the barns. Inside the pasture, there are fifteen men bidding on cattle and other objects. The auctioneer is standing in front of the three pieces of cattle in a red/ brown coat. In the lane and front yard, there are many pieces of furniture, kitchenware, and quilts for sale. Women and children are mainly in the yard, sitting or playing. There are dogs, cats, goats, and cows in the yard with most of the children. There is one woman looking at her reflection in a vanity much like one of the previous versions of this scene. The title of the painting, The Auction Sale, is located in the center of the bottom edge in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black. Auction sales are a country pleasure, combing through, looking for treasures, and socializing with neighbors and friends. Emma is telling us about her people. Of course there is the natural separation of the men and woman. She told me that the woman looking in the mirror, while no one was aware, was showing secret pride. The absolutely huge haystack attracted the boys to slide down. But I was attracted to the little girl in pink on the very top of this oversized haystack. Pink was always Miss Emms favorite color. Her physical challenges often limited her active participation. However, if she could have, she would have been the brave little girl on the very top of the haystack, ready to slide all the way down.
