The Auction

Description: This painting depicts an auction within the community and the many goods being sold in spring. There are three main buildings, multiple tables on the lawn, and a large wagon being used as the main stage for auctioning off items. The three main buildings include a large red barn with brown roofing, a small white shed with green shingles labelled Lunch including an open area to get food, and a large white farmhouse with green roofing. There are two buggies near the red barn on the left side of the painting with light brown horses hitched to them. Near the barn there are also two large trees that have pink blossoms on them. In the lane leading to the three buildings, there is a large hay wagon with a man standing on top of it, auctioning off various items to the men surrounding the wagon. The 22 men around the wagon have either blue or whit shirts, black suspenders, black pants, and blacks hats. In the farmhouses yard, there are tables and furniture set up to be sold. A rack of three brightly colored quilts is hanging by the front porch of the house. Other items being sold include bedroom furniture, chairs, apple butter, kitchenware, and food items. The women and children are scattered in the yard looking at items, making food, or interacting with others. The title of the painting, The Auction, is located along the bottom edge off-centered to the right side in black. The date and copyright are in the bottom left corner in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black.
