Description: |
This painting depicts visitors leaving a farm to head home at the beginning of a snow storm. The farm consists of four different buildings covered in blowing snow. The three barns in the painting are all a deep red with a snow covered roofs. On the right edge of the painting, a white farmhouse stand barely visible through the snow. A man is putting harnesses on a horse right outside the red barn on the far left side of the painting. The buggy that the horse will pull is still parked in the driveway. Three women stand outside the farmhouse in black waiting for the buggy to be hitched and watching the house or the storm. The trees have light bark colors and covered in the blowing snow. The blowing snow can be seen over most of the painting through light strokes of white all over the painting. In the lane that runs parallel to the bottom edge of the painting, a buggy and a sleigh have started the journey home. The sleigh on the left is green with black runners and pulled by a light brown horse. The couple sitting inside are covered by a lot of clothing and their scarves are flapping in the wind behind them suggesting strong winds. The buggy on the right is covered with a man driving another light brown horse. The title of the painting, Stormy Sunday Evening, is in the center of the bottom edge in black. The date is in the bottom left corner in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black. In northern Indiana a heavy blustery storm has been known to make traveling treacherous, especially in a horse drawn buggy. You can feel the wind whipping around as the Schrock family finally make it home safe. A big thanks to their horse, Tricks.Purchased from the collection of Steve & Sheri Scott-Welty |
