The Last Journey

Description: This painting depicts a funeral in the Old Order Mennonite Community. The background is a simple spring scene. A small farm is located in the top left corner with a white house and a red barn. Pink flowering trees line the ridgeline along with other green trees suggesting that this scene takes place in spring. A lane through the country leading to the church through the country. A long line of buggies is in the lane moving towards the church. Six buggies are heading to the church with families inside. Each buggy is pulled with a different colored horse. In the lane of the church, a black wagon for the casket pulls into the yard. The church yard contains two buildings, the church building and the overhang for hitching. All stalls are already filled in the overhang, so the next buggies will be hitched outside. A buggy in front of the funeral wagon is pulling into the yard to park. The church itself is white with green roofing and has many windows. Many men and women, 20, stand in the churchyard speaking to one another. The church doors are open for everyone to proceed indoors. The title of the painting, The Last Journey, is in the center of the bottom edge in black. The date is in the bottom left corner in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black.Everyone takes the last journey. Family, Friends, and congregation gather at the country church. In the Old Order Mennonite churches, the men enter through one door, the women through a separate door. The only thing that Emma said of this painting was, I will never paint another funeral.Purchased from the collection of Steve & Sheri Scott-Welty
