The Auction Sale

Description: This paintings depiction is very similar to ES.019 as an earlier version of a the scene. This version of the auction scene is full of people and different objects. There are three buildings that can be seen: the barn, the lunch building, and the farmhouse. The barn has only a slight edge showing in the left edge of the painting. The barn is bright red with a brown roof and what looks to be a stone foundation. There are three buggies next to the barn in the distance. Each has a horse of either black or brown and is hitched to the rail by the tree. Two men stand talking in front of the buggies. The lunch building is in the middle of the top part of the painting in white with a green roof. The word Lunch is painted on the front of the left side of this building. Two women in blue stand serving two men buying lunch in the building. Two pine trees can be seen above the roof of this building in shades of green, they are exactly the same height. A tall, white windmill covered in purple vining flowers stands next to the lunch building. The farmhouse is white with a green roof and stands on the right side of the painting. The house has three visible windows with green sunshades in the upper panes and vases of flowers in the lower panes. A pink vining flower (a difference from ES.019) climbs the side of the house until it is right next to the top window. In the yard, there are many objects including furniture, food, and many people. The people in the yard are mainly women, children, and those that are older. There are three cats in the yard unlike ES.019: two white cats and a tabby climbing a box. There are three large quilts hung by the house in pink, blue, and purple/black. Another quilt is being held between two women looking at it. Another note about one of the people in this painting is that Schrock has painted a reflection. This reflection is in a piece of furniture (a vanity) and is of a woman who is looking at the vanity to possible buy it. This is the first reflection that I have found in this collection. The last large area of this painting is in the lane where the auction is happening. A man in brown, holding a yoke, is standing on a flat wagon (possibly for hay) surrounded by other men in the yard. There are about 54 men standing around the wagon bidding on items. Each man is dressed in either a blue or white shirt, black suspenders, black pants, and a black hat. Schrock has also tried to make them appear as if they are looking in some different directions. The title of the painting, The Auction Sale, is in the center of the bottom edge in black. The date is in the bottom left corner in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black.
