Womans Department Club, Indianapolis Indiana, circa 1920

Description: Home at the corner of 17th and Meridian Streets which became the headquarters for the Womans Department Club of Indianapolis in 1917.The house was originally built around 1895 for Edward B. Hutchinson and his family. Hutchinson was a wealthy railroadman and his $1,000,000 grabbed headlines when he died in 1917. He was a widow with no living children and his heirs were a half-brother and nephew who lived out of state. Newspaper reports from the time indicated the estate owed more than $30,000 in taxes, and the house may have been sold to pay that bill since the Womans Department Club acquired it very soon after. From the Indiana Historical Society, which house the archives of the organization: Organized by Mrs. Luella McWhirter in 1912, the Womans Department Club was andremains active in community service and education projects throughout Indianapolis. The club originally met in the rooftop garden of the Hume-Mansur Building, but, in 1917, the club purchased a home at 1702 North Meridian Street. This building would serve as the clubhouse until 1964.The house sat at the northwest corner of Meridian and 17th Streets, visible in this photo. Most of this block was razed in the 1960s and a bank has occupied the site since.
